Senator Yonah Martin

The Honourable Yonah Martin has spent her life building bridges between different cultural communities in BC. Born in Seoul, Korea she immigrated to Canada with her family in 1972, settling in Vancouver.

In addition to her 21-year career as an educator in the Abbotsford, Burnaby and Coquitlam school districts, Ms. Martin co-founded the Corean Canadian Coactive (C3) Society in 2003; has served on the Multicultural Advisory Council of BC since 2006; volunteers on several other boards and committees; and is dedicated to mentoring youth and young adults.

She is a strong advocate of the arts and culture, and has produced and coordinated nearly a dozen festivals since 2003. In 2004, Ms. Martin received the ‘Spirit of Community’ award for Cultural Harmony for her work in the Tri-Cities region.

Most recently, Senator Martin was awarded the Order of Civil Merit Moran Medal on October 9th, 2009 by the Republic of Korea for her outstanding work in national development towards the enhancement of the rights of overseas Koreans. Married to Doug Martin since 1990, she is a proud mother of their daughter, Kiana Mi-Sun.
